I was fortunate to have been formed in the Catholic faith by my parents and teachers to see God as a loving and caring Being, not a policeman or judge who is waiting to catch me breaking God’s laws. I know that is not the case for many others, and I regret that. I was reminded of this when I recall the last phrase of the Gospel today: “Give back to Caesar, the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

The enemies tried to trap Jesus, but he avoided their trap. He advised people to obey the civil laws and be good citizens, yes. But, he also was interested in having us love him and doing right because of love. Love cannot be forced; it must be freely given. When God gave us a free will, God took a chance that we might choose not to love him. But God made us that way anyway.

So we need to be careful. Because God does not come knocking on our doors when we do not give God what we owe him. It is really easy for us to say, “I’ll pray later,” or “I’ll go to church NEXT week,” or “I’ll be good later.” LATER may not come. The only really important thing at our life’s end is the love for God and for others that we have shown daily.

Just another word about being a good citizen. Soon we will be vo!ng and exercising our right to cast a ballot. Hopefully we take that responsibility seriously and really look at what a candidate stands for and advocates. May we all be guided by our faith and beliefs in the rights of all people. Let us all get out and VOTE.

Tuve la suerte de haber sido formado en la fe católica por mis padres y maestros para ver a Dios como un Ser amoroso y cariñoso, no como un policía o juez que está esperando para atraparme quebrantando las leyes de Dios. Sé que no es el caso de muchos otros, y lo lamento. Me acordé de esto cuando recuerdo la úl!ma frase del Evangelio de hoy: "Devuélvele al César lo que es del César, ya Dios lo que es de Dios".

Los enemigos intentaron atrapar a Jesús, pero él evitó su trampa. Aconsejó a la gente obedecer las leyes civiles y ser buenos ciudadanos, sí. Pero, también estaba interesado en que lo amáramos y lo hiciéramos bien por amor. El amor no puede ser forzado; debe darse libremente. Cuando Dios nos dio el libre albedrío, Dios se arriesgó a que pudiéramos elegir no amarlo. Pero Dios nos hizo así de todos modos.

Por eso debemos tener cuidado. Debido a que Dios no viene a tocar nuestras puertas cuando no le damos a Dios lo que le debemos, es muy fácil para nosotros decir: "Oraré más tarde" o "Iré a la iglesia la próxima semana", o "Seré bueno más tarde". MÁS TARDE puede que no llegue. Lo único realmente importante al final de nuestra vida es el amor a Dios y a los demás que hemos demostrado a diario.

Solo una palabra más sobre ser un buen ciudadano. Pronto estaremos votando y ejerciendo nuestro derecho a emi!r un voto. Con suerte, nos tomamos esa responsabilidad en serio y nos fijamos realmente en lo que un candidato representa y defiende. Que todos seamos guiados por nuestra fe y creencias en los derechos de todas las personas. Salgamos todos y VOTEMOS.
